7 Days in Provence:
an itinerary with a private driver
A week is enough to experience several sides of Provence without turning the holiday into a race. Aix-en-Provence makes a convenient base for hilltop villages, vineyards, heritage, the Mediterranean coast and local food.
Day 1 — Aix-en-Provence: arrive and slow down
After arriving at Marseille Provence Airport or Aix-en-Provence TGV station, keep the first day deliberately light. Check in, walk through the historic centre, explore Cours Mirabeau, the squares and fountains, and enjoy dinner without adding another long drive.
Day 2 — The Luberon: Lourmarin, Bonnieux, Roussillon and Gordes
The Luberon deserves a full day. From Aix, a route can connect several well-known villages without trying to collect as many stops as possible. Three or four well-chosen places leave time to walk, have lunch and enjoy the landscape.
Day 3 — Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This day combines history and wine. Spend the morning in Avignon and around the Palais des Papes, then continue to Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a pre-arranged winery visit. A private driver is particularly useful on a wine day because guests can enjoy a tasting without having to drive afterwards.
Day 4 — Cassis and the Mediterranean
Cassis changes the scenery completely. The harbour, cliffs and Calanques make this a natural coastal day. Depending on the season and conditions, a boat trip can be booked, followed by lunch in Cassis before returning towards Aix later in the afternoon.
Day 5 — Sainte-Victoire, vineyards and food around Aix
After several longer days, staying closer to Aix creates a slower pace. Sainte-Victoire, nearby wine estates and a food experience can be combined without spending hours on the road. A tasting, estate lunch or cooking class can become the main reservation of the day.
Day 6 — The Alpilles: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux
The Alpilles have a different character from the Luberon. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence works well for a morning walk and lunch, while Les Baux-de-Provence offers a dramatic setting for the afternoon. Depending on interests, the day can include a cultural site, olive oil producer or wine estate.
Day 7 — Keep one day flexible
The final day does not have to introduce another major destination. It can be used to return to a favourite place, visit a market, spend more time in Aix, or continue towards Marseille before departure the following day.
Do you need to rent a car in Provence?
A rental car gives independence, but it also means driving, parking, navigation and planning around wine tastings.
